Sailing For Beginners – GIT & Galway City Sailing Club

Galway City Sailing Club is pleased to announce an IS Certified Adult Sailing Course in Galway City in conjunction with Galway Technical Institute (GTI).

The course will commence Wednesday October 4th in Galway Technical Institute, Father Griffin Road.

Designed For Adult Learners
This course is especially designed to suit the needs of the Adult Learner. It is an IS certified course (optional) and will be delivered in partnership with Galway Technical Institute.

Objective:
By the end of this course the learner will be able to sail the training boat in light wind conditions with assistance of the instructor.

Syllabus:
The course is a beginners course for sailing a dinghy and covers the IS “Start Sailing” syllabus. Participants need no previous knowledge in sailing. Requirements for the course include confidence in the water, ability to swim, a “can do attitude” and should be motivated to learn the skill of sailing a small boat.

Please Note:
The delivery of the practical part is weather dependent – the course tutor will arrange suitable dates with the class during delivery of the theory sessions.

● Sailing Techniques and Manouvres
● Capsize recovery

Assessment:
Assessment and ISA certification is optional. The learner can decide if he/she wishes to participate in assessment during class delivery or participates just for fun!

What the learner can expect from the course:
The learner will get an introduction to the exciting sport of sailing. He/She learns in an Adult Environment availing of first class experience in Further Education in Galway Technical Institute and the practical experience of our Senior Sailing Instructors in Galway City Sailing Club an IS registered Training Centre.

The Boat:
The training boats are Topper Topaz Topper boats are multiple award winning sailing dinghies and a popular boat for training centres all over the world. The boats are safe, comfortable and
can accommodate up to two people per boat.

The Gear:
For the practical training Galway City Sailing Club will provide almost everything. This includes wetsuit, buoyancy aid/life jacket. The learner will need to bring: an old pair of runners or wet
boots, swim gear, shower gel, towel, sun blocker and a positive learning attitude.

We have a number of requests from members and non-members for a refresher course for dinghy sailing. We are delighted now to offer a summer refresher for everybody who wants to get back onto the Bay.

Summer Evenings Sailing Refresher Course For Adults
The purpose of the course is to get back into the routine of sailing one of our Topaz Dinghies and practise sailing skills with a Senior Instructor. Over two evening sessions (18 July & 25 July) the course will address the most common sailing manoeuvres is hands on and will allow you to ask questions.

The cost is 50 Euro for members and 60 Euro.

Where: Galway City Sailing Club
What To Bring: Ideally a wet suit plus old trainers, if you do not have a wet suit simply bring a change of clothes and wear something you can get wet. Plus if you have a buoyancy aid please bring that too. We will have a number of wet suits and buoyancy aids that can be borrowed on the day.

Membership

Galway City Sailing Club aims to make sailing accessible to all. Membership fees are low plus to get you started we have club boats for members use.

Summer Fun at ISA Certified Sailing Courses In Galway City – July 2017

Junior Sailing Courses July 2017
Junior Sailing Courses in Galway City for Children (8+) and Juniors (13 – 18) announced by Galway City Sailing Club. Places on sailing courses are limited – Early Booking Advised.

Instruction will be provided by an ISA Senior Instructor and the course will be run in accordance with Irish Sailing Association Guidelines.

Galway City Sailing Club are co-sponsors of the Cong – Galway sailing race on Saturday June 10 along with Galway Bay Sailing Club & Cumainn Seoltóireacht an Spidéil in conjunction with race hosts Corrib Rowing & Yachting Club.

Galway City Sailing Club have a great record of participation in the race and this year, as ever, we are encouraging as many boats from the club to participate as possible.

Preparation For Race On Thursday June 8
Our usual procedure is to prepare the boats on the Thursday before the race and to drive them up on Friday afternoon. Leaving the boats at Lisloughrey Pier near Cong, Co. Mayo, overnight ready for the race on Saturday morning. Returning with the trailers to the Corrib Rowing & Yachting Club at the university leaving them there for use after the race.

Most of the organising gets done on the Thursday evening, who is sailing with who etc. so if you are interested please come and meet at the dinghy park on Thursday evening June 8.

– Thursday June 8: Prepare Boats & organise crew
– Friday June 9: Bring boats to Lisloughrey, Cong & leave boat trailers at Corrib Rowing & Yachting Club, Galway.
– Saturday June 10: Take part in race (see timetable below) & return boats to dinghy park after race.

Sailing Instructors Wanted For Summer (First 3 Weeks In July) 2017 in Galway City

Galway City Sailing Club is currently looking to recruit a number of committed Dinghy and Advanced sailing instructors for the Summer. We require active sailors/ instructors with a positive attitude, complete professionalism, and a passion for sailing and fun. Instructors will be responsible for the improvement of the club’s Junior & Youth sailors, a role that is held in the highest regard by the club. Both Dinghy and Advanced instructors must have one or more years’ instruction experience for the position they are applying for. Interviews will be scheduled for early in the season.

Membership Benefits

Galway City Sailing Club are pleased to announce a junior sailing course for Easter 2017 (April 10 – 14).

Parents / guardians are required to assist with lunchtime supervision. This course is aimed at club members. Early registration is recommended as places are limited.
